P. Patrick Hogan

P. Patrick Hogan, Writer/Director

Pope Dreams is Patrick Hogan's feature-film directorial debut. He received his MFA from USC film school in 1998, and his thesis film, The Business Card, is an award-winning short that has the distinction of being the first USC film ever sold to an airline for in-flight entertainment. Virgin Airlines played the film on trans-Atlantic flights to help keep passengers distracted from the fact that they were hurtling through the air several miles above the ground in a flimsy aluminum tube.

Along with his unique vision and sublime writing that captures characters filled with incomparable heart, Patrick has earned six Emmy nominations and three Golden Reel Awards for his work as a sound editor on HBO's "Six Feet Under" and "Warm Springs," and Fox's "Family Guy." Currently, he's working on several new scripts and selling bootleg Gymkata DVDs out of the back of his car to help pay for his big-screen TV.

Steve Loh

Steve Loh, Producer

Steve Loh is an accomplished producer in both the narrative and documentary fields. A writer-director in his own regard, he holds an MFA from USC film school, where he met collaborators Patrick Hogan and John Ealer in 1995. He's worked as a sitcom writer for Warner Bros, had feature scripts in development, and won festival awards for his short films. On the documentary side, he cites as one of his most intense projects Unjoined at the Hip, an award-winning program on a 27-hour separation surgery of conjoined twin infants at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.

When not in the land of make believe, Steve proselytizes on the merits of pie over cake, looks for the extraordinary moments in otherwise ordinary days, and every once in awhile believes that the world is just a much prettier place when he just leaves his contacts out.

  1. If you could have a superpower, what would it be, and what would you use it for?

The ability to control my destiny.

  2. Favorite food to eat? To cook?

Anything covered in sauce. To cook, anything that can be covered in sauce (think roasted garlic and vodka tomato cream pasta).

    Driving a schoolbus.

  4. Least favorite minor kitchen appliance.

Any non-knife gadget that promises to speed up your cooking by slicing, dicing, and never needs sharpening. Wheres the fun in that? Favorite: the Rotato. Hands down.

John Ealer

John Ealer, Director of Photography

Along with training at USC's graduate film school, John Ealer hails from the school of mad genius. John could probably capture a photographic image with nothing more than a napkin, a Dustbuster, and two half-ripe lemons if he had to. And if he hasn't, it's only because the narrative didn't call for it. Beyond his technical brilliance, John is a storyteller to the core.

His diverse cinematography portfolio includes the cult feature hit, The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green; commercial spots for Coca-Cola, Nike, and ABC; Unjoined at the Hip, the award-winning documentary on a 27-hour, conjoined twin infants separation surgery; and the Henry Ford Museum's seven-screen multimedia exhibition The Art of Manufacturing.

Among his accolades: the 2003 Best Cinematography Award from the Newport Beach Film Festival for One; the 2002 Kodak National Short Film Award for the World War II drama Daybreak Berlin; a 2002 Broadcast Design Association/ProMax Award for the ABC Network promo "Secrets"; and the 2000 ShoWest Coca-Cola Refreshing Filmmaker Award for Thick and Thin.

John's the kind of DP who rises far above the usual citizenry. Just keep your Dustbusters and lemons away from him.

Mae Edwards

Mae Edwards, Editor

Mae is truly a special kind of editor. Having worked on movie trailers, theatrical tv spots, commercials, documentaries, and long-form programming for the last eleven years, she intimately understands the technique, art, and craft of the edit -- cutting, combining, and recombining images and sound to tell a story. Drawing upon her musical background and documentary training, she's able to dictate pacing and flow, even when storylines need to be manufactured or changed.

When not editing, Mae can be found studying the culinary arts and composing music. Then again, cooking is simply cutting and recombining of a different kind... and writing music is creating the rhythm and pacing of an artistic expression.

Scratch that. Mae is always editing.
